Our Focus

NNAS is an incorporated national body of member nurse regulatory bodies that collectively developed a harmonized approach to the initial assessment of internationally educated nurses (IENs). This provides greater transparency, timeliness and predictability across Canadian jurisdictions, in addition to applying rigorous standards for qualification assessment, in the interest of the public.

A key benefit of the NNAS is increased access for IENs based on multiple delivery channels, enhanced online capabilities, and faster turnaround time for basic processes.

Significant features of the NNAS include:

  • A single national web portal
  • A common approach to initial document collections, authentication, validation and fraud screening
  • A consistent competency based assessment of the IEN application file
  • A consistent format advisory reports to regulatory bodies to inform eligibility assessments
  • A bilingual customer care centre for IEN applicants
  • national IEN database providing enhanced reporting and analysis capabilities

Our Funding

Initial contributions were provided by the 22, RN , LPN and RPN member regulatory bodies as well as several Provincial Governments.

Key funding, however, for Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the NNAS project has been provided by the Government of Canada's Foreign Credential Recognition Program (FCRP). The board and member organizations of NNAS wish to acknowledge the significant contribution and support of this initiative by the FCRP
